The Anoma A1: A Refreshing Take on Mid-Century Design

2024-06-14 // SuperPodium
Discover the Anoma A1, a unique watch inspired by mid-century design and featuring a triangular case and two-tone blue dial.

The Anoma A1 is a new watch brand that draws inspiration from mid-century design. What sets it apart is its distinctive triangular shape, reminiscent of a table designed by Charlotte Perriand in the 1950s. However, the A1 also incorporates elements from other iconic designs, such as Gilbert Albert's creations for Patek Philippe and the Hamilton Ventura. It even gives a nod to Cartier with its pebble-like aesthetic.

The polished steel case of the A1 measures 39 x 38mm, with a thickness of 9.45mm. Its lug-less design gives it a slightly smaller appearance on the wrist. The case reflects light from every angle, adding to its visual appeal. The watch comes with a grained leather strap in either grey or sand, attached using conventional spring bars.

The dial of the A1 is where the watch truly shines. The triangular shape of the case is echoed inside, creating an asymmetrical design. The metal dial features vertical brushing, with three layers of blue lacquer applied. This results in a stunning two-tone blue dial with a cross-hair design, reminiscent of vintage timepieces. The leaf hands have curved ends that mimic the shape of the case.

Powering the A1 is the Sellita SW100 automatic movement, offering a 38-hour power reserve. While a manual movement would have made the watch even thinner, the positioning of the crown on the triangular case makes it somewhat difficult to operate. The crown also has a "ghost" date position that serves no purpose, as the A1 does not feature a date window.

The Anoma A1 is currently available for pre-order on the brand's website, with a price of £1,300 (~$1,700). The first 100 watches will be individually numbered, adding a special touch for early adopters. After the pre-order period ends, this configuration of the A1 will no longer be produced. Delivery is scheduled for January 2025.

The A1's design is a refreshing take on the microbrand formula. While it pays homage to mid-century inspirations, it brings a modern twist to the table. The combination of the rounded, organic case and the rigid, two-tone dial creates an appealing tension. The A1's price is also reasonable for the thoughtful design it offers. Despite being a new brand, Anoma is boldly stepping into the market with an audacious design that stands out from the crowd.

The Anoma A1 presents a compelling option for watch enthusiasts who seek a unique timepiece that combines vintage-inspired aesthetics with contemporary flair. With its limited production and delivery planned for 2025, the A1 is sure to become a sought-after collector's item.
