Porsche Design, the studio founded by F.A. Porsche, is known for creating watches that pay tribute to the iconic cars manufactured by Porsche. In 2024, the studio is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 911 Turbo, the fastest street sports car of its time. To mark this milestone, Porsche Design has released a special edition of the Chronograph I, inspired by the design elements of the first Porsche 911 Turbo.
The 911 Turbo, launched in 1974, made a huge impact in the automotive industry. With its powerful 6-cylinder boxer engine delivering 260hp, it was known for its speed and danger. Despite its figures being surpassed by modern hatchbacks, the Turbo remains an iconic car that has left a lasting mark on the industry.
To honor the Turbo's anniversary, Porsche has also released a limited edition 992 Turbo S car. The Chronograph I - 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition is based on the 1972 model designed by F.A. Porsche, who was also the creator of the Porsche 911.
The limited edition watch features a 40.8mm titanium case with a scratch-resistant black titanium carbide coating. Its minimalist design, inspired by the Porsche 911 dashboard, has withstood the test of time. The watch is water-resistant up to 100m and features a matte black dial with white markings and luminous hands. A unique touch is the rotor, shaped like the Fuchs wheel that was used on the 1974 Turbo car, with the Porsche Crest in the middle.
The watch is powered by the calibre WERK 01.240, an automatic chronograph movement with a flyback function. It has a power reserve of 48 hours and is certified by COSC for precision. It comes with a beige-colored textile leather strap with a black velcro fastener, paying homage to the first Turbo's interior.
The Chronograph I - 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition is limited to 500 pieces and is available for purchase at Porsche Design stores and online. It retails for [price not mentioned].
